Bats can be a synonym for evil, a creature of the devil, and a harbinger of death. Well, these are not my words. Everyone is saying this. So, I decided to look upon are bats really our enemies or not?
Why everyone is stating Bats as our enemies?
Bats are the source and home of the world's most terrible viruses. The world is currently fighting with COVID-19, and bats played an evident role as the original source of the SARS-CoV-2 virus which leads to this disease.
The Truth about Bats
Bats host unusual varieties of diseases, even such viruses that can be deadly. But the interesting thing is that these viruses and diseases do not affect bats, but when these viruses spill into other mammals they behave terribly.
How does Bats help in the evolution of Viruses?
Recent studies suggest that bats have an aggressive immunity, which responsd to certain pathogens triggering their co-evolution. Bats still tolerate these evolved virions, but other mammals struggle against these when it enters their system.
Can't we wipe out Bats to stop these diseases?
Well, no one actually knows the exact answer to this question. From my point of view, wiping out bats colonies may not be a solution. Why? Here's the reason.
Directly harming bats in an attempt to lower the risk of future SARS or any other viruses may absurdly lead to a rise in disease risk.
Don't you know what happened in Uganda? They attempt to wipe out a larger colony of bats, and it leads to a rise in cases of the Marburg virus. Maybe bats are protecting us from these deadly viruses. No one knows it exactly at all.
