Japanese researchers seemed to be lucky and surprised when they found single-celled creatures living in tiny cracks inside volcanic rocks which was taken deep beneath sea-surface. This success is inspiring them to start a whole new search for life on mars.
Yohey Suzuki said that he is now almost over-expecting that he can found life on Mars. He further stated that it is not just a dream, his team is planning to begin a collaboration with NASA's Johnson Space Centre to examine rocks collected from Martian surface by Rovers.
The Surprising Story
Yohey said that volcanoes under the sea blew red hot lava which cools with time and transforms into rocks with small cracks. So much smaller as just few millimeters gap in-between. These cracks fills with clay, minerals and bacteria that multiplies exponentially. The more surprising thing is that the identified microbes have same energy making process as humans, relying on oxygen. They are aerobic bacterias.
Yuhey further described that these cracks are very friendly and magical place. If you can find clay minerals, you can almost find microbes living in them.
The Samples
The samples of rocks were collected late 2010 as the part of ongoing Integrated Ocean Drilling Program. These samples were estimated 13.5 million, 33.5 million and 104 million years ago. The bacteria appeared as glowing green spheres tightly packed into tunnels that glow orange, surrounded by black rock. That orange glow comes from clay mineral deposits, the "magic material" giving bacteria an attractive place to live.
The End Notes
Well, that's the truth of life lying very beneath the sea but NASA's spirit rover has also found some clay on Martian surface. This suggests that we could find life there. Its a hope.
Cheers!
