In everyone's perspective Social Distancing is the only way to stop the spread of the Coronavirus. But do you exactly know that it can be a threat to Society. Well, in the sense of mental health.
How? When faced with danger, human draw closer together. Social distancing thwarts this impulse.
The corona crisis present in the countries around the globe is perhaps the biggest challenge which most of us are facing since Second World War. Well, we still don't have a vaccine for this. And in the absence of Vaccine our primary defense against it is Social Distancing i.e., minimizing our contacts with others in public places.
Human Psychology
Several questions have been asked in an article published in Current Biology.
What do humans do when faced with a collective threat? This is a core question of Human psychology and major practical concern for current pandemic situation. So, what is the answer to this. Well, Sociological and psychological studies show that, under stress, people frequently remain calm and cooperative. What’s more, rather than selfish avoidance, it is cooperation and contact-seeking that are our primary responses to threat.
The unfortunate consequence is that, in response to the current threat of infection, we desire social contact, particularly with the loved and the vulnerable but this can be hazardous for now in the perspective of social health.
Physiological Effect of Social Distancing
Social interaction is a natural process not only in threats but also in normal conditions. Social touch contributes physiological regulation to an individual. Close social interactions doesn't give us any extra rewards. Our brains doesn't respond positively to presence of Social Interactions but it do responds negatively when at its absence.
Studies in the fields of neuroscience, psychology and evolutionary biology have already shown that we are not as egoist as some disciplines think. They continue to produce evidence which demonstrates that threatening situations make us even more cooperative and more likely to be socially supportive than we usually are.
The End Notes
The Internet and Social Media are said to be making us unsocial. But in present situations they provide an acceptable and effective alternative to physical contact. Social media make it possible for large numbers of people to reach out virtually to neighbors, relatives, friends and other contacts.
Okay. So, that's all in this. Please do post your views in comment section because I love exploring everyone's perspective. Meet you soon with my notes on something different.
Cheers!
