NavIC refers to as Navigation with Indian Constellation is an autonomous regional satellite navigation system that provides accurate real-time positioning and timing services developed by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).
But do you know, that you cannot use it on your current smartphones. In this article, I will be answering some frequently asked questions about NavIC. Let us go deeper.
Is NavIC better than GPS?
As NavIC satellites use dual frequency bands (L5-band and S-band), it makes the system relatively more accurate than GPS, GPS uses a single band and makes compensation for error due to signal deterioration by the atmosphere. In the parameter of accuracy NavIC is definitely better than GPS. As GPS signals can easily get deteriorated by any hindrance like mountains or atmospheric density but NavIC signals still work harder and accurate.
In the parameter of coverage GPS is actually very better than NavIC as it covers the whole earth whereas NavIC only covers India and a boundary of 1000 km around it. Well, it may be extended in future and so this article.
Can I and you use NavIC?
Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has developed NavIC Technology that will be integrated in the next Android phone that you buy.
Well, that's all the game of NavIC based chipsets. Qualcomm is planning to introduce chipsets integrating NavIC technology and any smartphone with that chipset can use NavIC. NavIC will provide two types of location services—the standard positioning service as well as the encrypted service for security agencies as well as military access.
How accurate is NavIC?
NavIC will provide standard positioning service with a position accuracy up to 5 m. For your comparison, GPS had a position accuracy of 20–30 m.
The Video
You can watch this video on NavIC. I have tried to give simplified explanation on the subject.

The End Notes
NavIC is a very big project that our Indian Space Agency has completed successfully and is in its working stage. It has very much known and unknown benefits for our defense organizations and is also vey useful for public use with its accuracy upto 5m.
That's all for today. I will be back with more articles soon. Till then have a good one.
Cheers!
